Expedia’s Level 2 Travel Trends
Since the government announced the easing of COVID-19 restrictions in New Zealand, searches on Expedia.co.nz almost doubled (46%) compared to the previous week in early May, indicating Kiwis are keen to get out and support the local travel industry as domestic travel becomes possible as part of the level 2 alert.
Looking at the top booked destinations over the past week, Queenstown, Taupo and Rotorua were in the top five, indicating Kiwis are seeking a getaway with plenty of nature and adventure activities to enjoy the great outdoors after being in lockdown since March. Although international borders are still closed, Kiwis are being hopeful with Fiji appearing in the top ten searched for destinations.
“With social distancing and the lack of face-to-face interaction taking a toll on Kiwis over the past several weeks, we’re excited to see green shoots of travel interest and we look forward to what is to come as New Zealand continues to defeat the virus,” said Justine Yusi, Communications Manager, Expedia New Zealand.
“As travellers continue to plan and book future trips, we want to help Kiwis feel secure in their choices, and for additional peace of mind we encourage our travellers to keep flexible and refundable options in mind.”
As Kiwis continue to dream and crave an overseas holiday, Expedia has launched an inspiring Travel from Home series of virtual experiences to whet their appetite and help discover new destinations and cultures they may not have considered before and could add to their bucket list. From immersive cooking experiences, guided tours by locals to interactive cultural dances, uncover a new part of the world here: https://www.expedia.co.nz/lp/things-to-do-from-home
