Booking.com Traveller Review Awards

Booking.com has announced it will present 7,079 Traveller Review Awards to New Zealand partners, with Canterbury also receiving a coveted spot in the Top 10 Most Welcoming Regions in the world.

The global awards recognise partners across 220 countries and territories who made travel experiences more memorable for travellers, whether they were booking a place to stay, rental car or airport taxi. And the Most Welcoming Countries, from Taitung County (Taiwan) and Tasmania (Australia) to Prešovský kraj (Slovakia) and Oberösterreich (Austria) to Nova Scotia (Canada) and New Zealand’s own Canterbury, reveal hospitality can be found in every corner of the globe.

Todd Lacey, Area Manager of Booking.com New Zealand, says the country’s award achievements highlight the excellent hospitality Kiwis are known for. “To also have Canterbury singled out as one of the most welcoming regions in the world is a further testament to the outstanding service and hospitality our partners deliver,” says Lacey.

Most Welcoming Towns

As well as rewarding thousands of incredible New Zealand properties, Booking.com has uncovered the Most Welcoming Towns in the country based on the share of properties receiving a Traveller Review Award in 2021. Southern charm is seemingly alive and well in New Zealand with Oamaru, Hokitika, and Invercargill taking out the top three spots. They were followed by Cambridge, Picton, Tekapo, Kerikeri, Palmerston North, Paihia and Twizel.

Destinations had to have at least 50 eligible accommodations to be included in this list and were sorted by the highest share of winners per destination.  To discover more about these incredible cities and regions, click here.

Holiday homes, Apartments and Unique Places Remain Top Traveller Favourites

While hotels were the second most-awarded accommodation type globally in 2021, in New Zealand travellers dished out the greatest number of awards to holiday homes, proving our enduring love for the traditional Kiwi bach and crib. Apartments and Bed & Breakfasts received the second and third highest number of awards suggesting locals favour independent holidays. The top five most awarded accommodation types were rounded out by motels, then hotels.

Transport Partners Kept Travellers Moving

Recent Booking.com research shows that 24% of travellers globally took a road trip in 2020 and 32% travelled more domestically in 2020 when compared to 2019. As road trips and domestic travel became more common over the last year, Booking.com understands the immense undertaking that its transport partners faced including increased customer demand in certain markets and swift introduction of increased cleanliness measures in between pick-ups, provision of masks and sanitisers and minimising customer contact and social distancing, among other initiatives. This year, 2,100 rental car pick-up locations available on Booking.com, which offers rental cars in 160 countries worldwide, have been awarded.
