Expedia searches surge across the Tasman

Following the announcement of the opening of the Trans-Tasman bubble allowing quarantine-free travel between Australia and New Zealand from April 19, 2021, searches on Expedia.co.nz surged by almost 460%, compared to the previous week.

With Expedia’s Vacation Deprivation study revealing more than half (57%) of Kiwis are feeling holiday deprived, it’s no surprise Kiwis are eager to explore international borders once again. Data also shows Aussies are just as ready to cross the ditch, with searches on Expedia.com.au for New Zealand destinations jumped by almost 500%, compared to last week.

Based on Expedia data, Kiwis are hoping to return to old Aussie favourites, with many located the sunshine state, Queensland. Looking at where Aussies are hoping to explore in Aotearoa, Queenstown and Auckland top the list. However, some are venturing outside the norm, with Otago and Wellington also making the top searched destinations following the announcement. As Kiwis start to plan their future getaways, below are some top travel tips and hacks to help travellers make the most of their trips:

Book on a Sunday, fly on a ThursdayBased on past data, the ideal day to book an international flight is on a Sunday where the lowest ticket prices tend to occur^. Whereas flying on a Tuesday or Thursday can save Kiwis almost 20% compared to departing on a Sunday.

Magic Monday: For international trips, the lowest average daily rate (ADR) on accommodation tends to occur on a Monday, where travellers can save just over 10% compared to staying on a Thursday or Friday, which usually has the highest ADR.

Flexibility is foolproof: Flexibility is increasingly becoming a pre-requisite for Kiwis, according to Expedia’s Vacation Deprivation study, 34% say they will only book travel that is fully refundable. For additional peace of mind, use Expedia’s ‘Free Cancellation’ filter for properties offering flexible and refundable options. Ensure to check the fine print as some hotels require travellers to cancel more than 24 hours before check-in to be eligible for free cancellation.

Bundle and save: Unlock savings by booking your flight and hotel together, with everything in one place, it takes the stress out of planning.

Justine Yusi, Expedia’s ANZ Communications Manager comments: “The much-anticipated Trans-Tasman travel bubble marks a milestone in the resumption of travel and is welcome news for the tourism industry across both regions. The increase in searches following the announcement is a positive indication that there’s strong appetite and eagerness among our consumers to travel again.

At Expedia, we recognise planning a holiday can be stressful during these uncertain times, we want to relieve the stress of planning and equip travellers with relevant information and tools they need to feel confident to travel again. We continue to encourage our travellers to opt for flexibility in their booking and to consider our savings tips to get their ideal travel outcome.”
